The Roman site of Birdoswald (right) is a short drive away. There, you can see remains of the Roman frontier system within the fort and surroundings. The east gateway is said to be the best preserved along the line of the Wall. Vindolanda and Housesteads roman forts are also all within easy reach by car.

Gretna Green also within a half hours drive, is one of the world's most famous wedding venues, with its stories of romance, scandals, and illicit trysts. For centuries, young lovers have made for Gretna Green, where they can wed in a hurry under Scotland's lenient marriage laws.

St Martin's Church, Brampton renowned for its magnificent stained glass windows designed by Edward Burne Jones is well worth a visit.

Lanercost Priory, a historic and living church dating from 1166, is only a short drive away. Today it serves as both a parish church and also a venue for music and craft events.

Carlisle City Centre is only 5 miles away and boasts a fine medieval castle (left) which is one of many where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned. There is a fine Cathedral (the most northerly cathedral in England), Tullie House Museum of the Borders and excellent shops, including the award-winning Lanes Shopping development.
